Natural Remedies for Hair Loss

By Dr. Lori Jokinen, DC – Functional Medicine & Chiropractic Care in Woodbury, MN

In last week’s blog, I discussed common causes of hair loss and the importance of functional lab testing to uncover the root causes behind thinning, shedding, or brittle hair. Many patients across Woodbury and the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area are relieved to learn that once we identify underlying imbalances, there is a great deal we can do naturally to support hair regrowth.

The encouraging news?
Targeted nutrition and supplements can play a powerful role in restoring healthy hair.

Supplements That Support Healthy Hair Growth

Essential Fatty Acids (Omega-3s)

Essential fatty acids are crucial for reducing inflammation and supporting scalp and follicle health. You’ll find them in:

  • Fatty fish (salmon, sardines)
  • Walnuts
  • Chia seeds
  • Flax seeds

For those who don’t regularly consume these foods, a high-quality fish oil supplement can be beneficial.

According to Harvard Health, omega-3 fatty acids help regulate inflammation and support overall cellular health.

For general wellness, aim for at least 1,000 mg daily of EPA and DHA, with higher doses often beneficial when inflammation markers (like CRP) are elevated.

B-Complex Vitamins

B vitamins are involved in nearly every metabolic process in the body—including hair growth, hormone balance, and stress regulation.

Chronic stress raises cortisol levels, which is a well-known contributor to hair loss.

When choosing a B-complex supplement, look for high-quality forms such as:

  • Methylcobalamin (B12)
  • 5-MTHF / Methyltetrahydrofolate (folate)

Avoid products that rely on cyanocobalamin or folic acid, which are less bioavailable.

Iron (Only With Testing)

Iron deficiency is one of the most common contributors to hair loss—especially in women.

Ferritin levels below 50 ng/mL are strongly associated with excessive shedding. However, iron should never be supplemented blindly. Too much iron can be toxic and harmful.

That’s why I always recommend testing first.

Foods That Naturally Support Hair Growth

In addition to targeted supplements, certain foods are excellent for nourishing hair follicles naturally:

  • Salmon
  • Sardines
  • Chia seeds
  • Fresh ground flax seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Collagen (or bone broth)
  • Apple cider vinegar

These foods support:
✔ Reduced inflammation
✔ Hormone balance
✔ Blood sugar stability
✔ Improved circulation
✔ Healthier scalp environment

All critical factors for long-term hair health.

Don’t Forget the Role of Exercise

Movement matters more than most people realize. Regular exercise supports:

  • Improved circulation to the scalp
  • Better blood sugar regulation
  • Reduced stress and cortisol
  • Improved hormone balance

If hair loss is related to stress, metabolic imbalance, or circulation issues, lifestyle factors become just as important as supplements.

A Personalized Functional Medicine Approach Works Best

While nutrition and supplements can be powerful, they are most effective when guided by comprehensive lab testing and individualized care.

At my clinic, Functional Health Unlimited in Woodbury, MN, I help patients identify the root cause of their symptoms so we can build a plan that supports lasting results—not temporary fixes.

If you live in Woodbury, Oakdale, Cottage Grove, Lake Elmo, Stillwater, or anywhere in the Twin Cities, functional medicine testing can offer clarity and direction.
